Deep Thought with Science Simulations

Good science activities require deep student engagement, but many interesting topics like ecology, genetics and climate change are difficult to explore in the classroom. Simulations permit students to investigate long-term phenomena like evolution and complex phenomena like global warming. We'll work with free simulation software that runs on Windows, Macintosh or Linux and comes with simulations appropriate for grades 4-12. Bring your own laptop!

CollegeCal at Ellis

CollegeCal is a program developed by Dave Kassling, who was a graduate of Shady Side Academy in '02.  The product will be in use for the first time this fall, at both Shady Side and The Ellis School.  It is a revolutionary product that for the first time brings everything in a student's life to one page that can be "one-click" added to their personal, weekly calendar.  This includes classes, homework, sports schedules, campus events (speakers, plays).


Operation Safe Surf

Internet safety is a challenge facing all schools. This program will demonstrate the dangers students face online and what schools can do to protect their students. It will feature discussions of online predators, social networking sites and cyber bullying. It is an interactive program, and attendees will receive lessons to take back to their schools.

 Integrated Uses of Moviemaker


Presenter: Jim Brucker, 6th Grade Teacher - Fort Cherry School District

Moviemaker is a free program on windows and there are many uses for it in the classroom. It is an excellent medium to introduce new units with images and music.  It can be used as a digital storyteller with student narration.  Informative slides and video can also be imbedded into a production for direct instruction. 
 

 


Computational Approaches to Teaching Science

Both computational thinking and computational tools such as modeling, simulation and visualiztion can enhance the way that secondary science in all disciplines is taught.  This session will review several programs being offered by the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) for professional development that introduce computational approaches into the high school science curriculum.  These programs utilize the cutting edge technology that is used by research scientists today.
